Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has stated that the 1-0 win over Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabeu is not the end of the tie and that the players should remain focused ahead of the second leg at the Allianz Arena next week. The Spanish club continued their impressive record over the German club at this ground after winning yet another match. The 1-0 win was achieved next to a brilliant counter-attacking goal from Karim Benzema. Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel di Maria also had brilliant opportunities to extend the lead, but the match finished with a narrow advantage for the Spaniards.
Casillas had a number of important saves to make over the course of the match. One of them came in the final few minutes of the encounter, as he pushed their way an effort from Mario Gotze. Bayern Munich dominated the entire match with more than 70% possession, but they were unable to find a way past the stubborn Real difference. The home advantage in the second leg gives Bayern Munich a chance to still recover from this away defeat. Casillas has pointed this out and says that his teammates should be aware of the threat from the German club, who are the reigning holders of the trophy.
“It’s a positive result, but not definitive. It’d be wrong of us to think that the tie is over. The first final we have is this coming Tuesday. We’re going to subdue our emotions from this evening, think about Saturday…then think about our first Champions League final, which is in Munich. It’s a good result in terms of our interests, but we also came off a good result against Dortmund. We need to prepare ourselves for what’s going to come next Tuesday,” said Casillas, who has been the preferred goalkeeper for the cup matches.
