Real Madrid have moved into the position as being one of the favourites for the la Liga title after an impressive winning streak that now extends to 18 matches.

Iker Casillas has been part of the streak even though there was a danger of the Spaniard losing his place at the start of the season. Casillas’ was subjected to abuse from his own supporters, as his form was not the best. The 33-year-old has since recovered and now plays a key role as he has always done at Real Madrid. Compared to previous years, Casillas has already made close to 20 appearances in all competitions. He has missed only two league matches this campaign.

The latest 3-0 win for Real Madrid in the league against Celta de Vigo has moved them four points clear of reigning champions Atletico Madrid. After losing several important players over the summer, Atletico are not seen as one of the contenders for the title. Casillas does not think this way, as he sees Atletico only four points behind them in the table. Atletico came within a few seconds of beating Real Madrid in the Champions League final too. Due to these factors, Casillas says that Real Madrid should avoid any complacency going into the winter break.

“Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are our rivals in domestic competitions, and I think they’ll both fight until the end for the league. We also hope [to fight for La Liga] because we’re doing really well at the moment. In Europe? Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid,” said Casillas. Madrid have conceded only one goal in the last five matches and this has been attributed to Casillas rediscovering his form. It was only a few months ago when the 33-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal amongst several other clubs.
