Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has said that the fantastic run to the Champions League final will mean nothing if the newly crowned Spanish champions can’t back it up by beating Premier League heavyweights Liverpool in the final to win the competition.

Iker Casillas shared his thoughts ahead of the Champions League final clash between Real Madrid and Liverpool at the Stade de France in the French capital city of Paris on Saturday in a chat with Spanish newspaper Marca. According to him, Liverpool and Real Madrid are the best two teams in Europe at the moment. He added that the two clubs are worthy finalists.

Ex-FC Porto and Real Madrid shot stopper Casillas knows a thing or two about winning the Champions League title. He’s a three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid over a 15-year period. His first Champions League title win came during the 1999/00 before he added further titles in 2001/02 and 2013/14.His last Champions League title was under current Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti after they came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 4-1 at the end of extra time.

Speaking further on the upcoming Champions League final encounter between Real Madrid and Liverpool, Iker Casillas stated that nobody will remember what happened in the previous rounds against Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Chelsea and Manchester City if Real Madrid cannot win the title. Real Madrid were on the brink of elimination against those teams before they showed character and fighting spirit to navigate their way out of the situation by scoring goals.

Real Madrid have lost three of their 16 European Cup/Champions League finals with the last one coming against Liverpool 41 years ago. The Spanish champions have won six more titles than any other team and they can extend it to seven titles with a win over Liverpool in the final. For Liverpool, they can equal Italian champions AC Milan on seven titles if they see off Real Madrid in the Champions League final this weekend.
