NOT FIRST CHOICE

By

Iker Casillas went from being the undisputed man in between the posts of Real Madrid to being a substitute player behind the likes of Diego Lopez; this was during the time that Jose Mourinho was the coach of Real Madrid who almost always preferred having Lopez ahead of Casillas.

Now with Carlo Ancelotti in charge of the tactical side of the team both Lopez and Casillas are being switched out week in and week out but the veteran shot-stopper Iker Casillas has given a hint at his future.

Casillas could leave Real Madrid in January

By

Real Madrid shot stopper Iker Casillas has revealed that he could have to leave the club at some point if the situation surrounding his position doesn’t change.

He stated that it might happen even during the January transfer window or during the summer transfer window but he has admitted that he has to come to a decision after falling out of favor at the club.

The Spanish international skipper has played only a handful of times for the club this term, mainly in the UEFA Champions League after he lost his place to Diego Lopez who was signed as a backup option for him when he sustained a broken arm last season under former manager Jose Mourinho.

Speaking to a media outlet, the outspoken Spanish national team skipper stated that if the situation remains as it is right now and doesn’t change in the next three months, there is nothing to do except look to leave. Iker Casillas is hailed as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time and many have criticized the club’s handling of a player who has spent his career at Real Madrid as disrespecting all that he has done for the club.

He stated that he has been at the club since he was a child but he knows there might come a day when the decision to leave has to be made but he mentioned that if that day ever comes, he will do it with a very heavy heart because the love for the club flows in his veins.

Iker Casillas also revealed that he wanted to tell the club to let him go in September but now he thinks it is time to leave and his desire to leave the club has put the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal on alert.

Iker Casillas lauds Real’s chase for Bale

By

Real Madrid skipper Iker Casillas has thrown his name into the hat backing the club’s chase of Tottenham Hotspur flyer Gareth Bale.

The legendary Spanish goalkeeper has branded the Welsh winger as one of the top three or four players in Europe at this time and has lauded the club in their chase for the player. The Spaniards are continuing with their long drawn pursuit of the player and Casillas has also sent out a thinly veiled plea, urging the player to join the Madrid giants.

Madrid based Spanish paper Marca, which almost acts as a mouthpiece for Real, had published an article recently where it had stated that Daniel Levy, the Tottenham Hotspur chairman has demanded a whopping £ 126 million transfer fee for the player, which will absolutely shatter the world record £ 80 million fee Real paid for Cristiano Ronaldo to sign him from Manchester United.

And Iker Casillas, who was speaking from the club’s pre-season tour of the United States of America, stated that they are talking about one of the top three or four players in the continent at this time and it is quite normal that his name is being linked with arguably the biggest clubs in the world because he has all the attributes to succeed at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And although he admits that the transfer saga could be a very controversial one, he has stated that when it comes to a player of the quality of the Welshman, it is something expected. He mentioned that every transfer is controversial in its own way but they are talking about a very decisive player. Iker Casillas remains optimistic that the club will make a huge signing before the transfer window closes for the summer and is hopeful that it will be Gareth Bale.

JOSE MISTREATED IKER

By

The Barcelona midfielder, Xavi, has said that Jose Mourinho didn’t treat Iker Casillas well towards the end of the last season.

Casillas had fractured his hand while playing in the Copa Del Rey match against Barcelona in January this year. He recovered from that blow in a couple of months and was available for selection from April, but, surprisingly, Mourinho didn’t send him on the field in any of the remaining matches of the season.

For Real Madrid’s last game of the season against Osasuna, Mourinho didn’t even include Casillas in the match day squad despite the fact that the second choice goalkeeper Diego Lopez was ill and was unavailable for selection. He went with the fourth choice goalkeeper Jesus Collado in that match.

At the end of the season, Mourinho said publicly that he didn’t regret his decision of dropping Casillas in the last few matches. According to Mourinho, he should have done that much earlier.
Xavi didn’t like these statements of Mourinho at all. Talking to the reporter of a Spanish newspaper, Xavi said, “I don’t have any problem with the fact that he dropped Iker. It’s his statements that have upset me. How can he say in the media that he should have replaced Iker much earlier? He has not shown respect to a player who has been sensational for both Real Madrid and Spain over the years.”

“Iker is one of my closest friends. I talk to him frequently and I know that these statements of Mourinho have hurt him a lot.”

Casillas has been playing for Real Madrid since the last 15 years. He had made his debut for the first team of Madrid when he was just 18 years of age. He has so far featured for Los Blancos in more than 600 games.

RONALDO IS IMPORTANT

By

The Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has said that the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo is going to be extremely important for the Spanish club when they take on Manchester United in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 stage. The 27-year-old scored in the first leg match between the two clubs.

Even though Casillas will not be part of the second leg at Old Trafford, the 31-year-old will be keen to progress into the quarter-final stage of the competition. Casillas is one of the few members of the squad who have already won the Champions league title with Real Madrid.
Madrid will be coming into the match with great confidence after having beaten the likes of Barcelona in two matches in the last few weeks.

Casillas has said that it is imperative that Madrid are extremely good in attack. The Spanish club need to score in order to have any chance of progressing to the next round. Ronaldo has already said that he would not be celebrating his he scores against United at Old Trafford. The possibility of him achieving the feat looks extremely likely, as Ronaldo has been on a great run of form in recent weeks. He has recently been responsible for scoring in consecutive El Clasico matches as well.

“Cristiano is vital for us. Right now he’s in sensational form and gives us his maximum. It will be difficult as they also know how to play and their ground is tough to play at. We have to transfer what we did here at Camp Nou to Old Trafford. It is also 1-1 and we have to score and keep a clean sheet. That’s the aim that we’re going with,” Casillas. Madrid will be giving an intense focus on European competitions this season especially because they cannot win the league this season.

CASILLAS WORKING HARD

By

The goalkeeper of Real Madrid, Iker Casillas, has said that he is working hard to cement his place in the starting XI of Madrid again.

The Madrid skipper was surprisingly left out of the starting line up in the recently played La Liga matches against Real Sociedad and Malaga. He was replaced by Antonio Adan in the starting XI.
When asked about him being dropped from the starting XI, Casillas said, “Sometimes, you need something like this to give you a bit more inspiration. I need to take it in a positive way and work hard to make a comeback. That’s what I am doing at the moment. I am working hard in the training sessions and trying to improve my weaknesses.”

Last week, the, manager of Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho had said that no player in the team should take his place in the starting XI for granted.

When asked about Mourinho’s statement, Casillas said, “I am not upset about what Mourinho said. He was absolutely right. No matter how big a player you are, you need to be consistent, otherwise, you would have to sit on the bench.”

“My form hadn’t been that good in the last few matches and that’s why I was left out of the staring XI. What I need to do now is to train hard and convince the manager to give me starting opportunity again.

When asked about his relationship with Antonio Adan, Casillas said, “There is a competition between me and Antonio for the keeper’s place in the XI, but, that has not affected our relationship at all. We are very good friends and often talk to each other about goalkeeping skills. He is a great bloke and a very good goalkeeper as well.”

STEP UP

By

The Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has said that his teammates should step up to the plate if they are to overturn the huge deficit over Barcelona in the Spanish la Liga. Real Madrid have been extremely poor in the league this season, as they have fallen eight points behind their archrivals Barcelona in the table.

Their lead season took another turn for the worst after they were defeated 1-0 by Real Beltis during the weekend. Benat scored in the 17th minute to give the home team a surprise lead in the match. They managed to hold on to a victory that would send Real Madrid to the third defeat of the season.

This coupled with the win for Barcelona meant that they are level on points behind the leaders with just 13 games played in the season. Even though there are a lot of them still remaining in the season, there is little hope that Real Madrid will now be able to catch Barcelona even with one El Clasico match remaining in the season. Iker Casillas said after the match that this was two steps back for Real Madrid in the title race. He has said that the players are extremely angry with themselves, but they need to transfer that anger onto the pitch.

“It was a blow and we have taken two steps back in the title race. Jose Mourinho has a temper and sometimes you have to feel more protected by your players. We need to shut up and show that we are angry on the pitch. Everything has an influence, such as fatigue, and the fact Betis were thrashed [in a recent 5-1 defeat] by Sevilla. Also, the referee did not make the right decision at times,” said Casillas. Madrid have been able to win only two of the last five matches in all competitions.

CASILLAS WANTED QUALIFICATION

By

The captain of the Spanish football team, Iker Casillas, has said that the World Cup Champions should not have been made to play in the World Cup qualifying tournament and they should have been given entry into the finals directly, like Neymar‘s Brazil side have. Casillas was talking to the reporters ahead of Spain’s opening World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

Before 2010, the world cup winners didn’t need to participate in the qualifying tournament, but, the system has been changed a bit. Now, each and every team needs to go through the qualifying competition to find a place in the finals.

As per Casillas, if Spain doesn’t make it to the finals, the tournament would be played without the reigning champions. How bizarre it would be! This system is a bit strange. The older system was definitely better in which the reigning champions used to get direct entry into the main tournament. There was no point changing that system.

There are four other teams in the Spain’s group in the qualifying tournament. Those four teams are Georgia, France, Belarus and Finland. Only one team can qualify from this group. The French team is also quite strong and it would not be easy for Spain to top the group. The Spanish team will play against France in its third match. Before that, the team would face Georgia and Belarus.

As per Casillas, the team needs to win the first two matches with a profound margin. A draw just can’t be afforded because it makes you lose two points. The match against France is going to be tough.

So, the team needs to secure 6 points before going into that match. The Spanish skipper thinks that the team has got the capability to win the World Cup for the second consecutive time. He said that the Spanish players have their own playing style and if they play up to their abilities, it would be very hard for any other team to stop them.
